Memorizing Scripture with Kids
Hearing my children recite scripture and sing worship songs always takes my breath away. Although at times it can be difficult to memorize scripture with kids, the toddler and preschool years are some of the greatest years of molding and developing strong Christian faith. There are so many benefits for adults memorizing scripture, and I believe those same benefits will develop in our children as well, and from an early age.
We all want our children to form good habits, and memorizing scripture should definitely be one of them. The earlier you establish it, the better it will stick. Give your child a visual to help them memorize their verse(s). Let them see you memorizing scripture as well. What they see us parents doing makes a huge impact on them. Pray that your children will not only memorize, but begin to understand and apply these verses as well.
Here are 9 bible verses that I use with my littles to help them carry God’s Word in their hearts wherever they go. Click on the image below to download the MEMORY CARDS. Print them on card stock and laminate for longer use. I also hole-punch ours and put them on a ring in our school area.
Ideas to Help Memorize Scripture with Kids
Repetition
Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up (Deuteronomy 11:19). Talk about your verse often. Pick times throughout you day when you practice. This could be at meal times, before you move on to the next school subject, or maybe during your bedtime routine.
Sing the Verses
Growing up we were always singing scripture and sometimes didn’t even realize it. We loved Psalty the Singing Songbook and Colby’s Missing Memory. I still remember these songs to this day and love sharing them with my kids through YouTube and Pandora. Singing scripture is an easy and catchy way to help kids remember. You can create your own tune or choose music you already know, like the “ABC song” or “Row Your Boat”.
Choreography
We love to dance to worship music in our house and it’s a great stress reliever when we’ve had a hard day. I used to dance and choreograph professionally, so it’s fun for me to share a little of what I know with my littles. Incorporating hand motions and movement to our scripture learning has become our favorite activity. If you prefer not to dance, you can alway try sign language as another great option.
Visibility
Make it ever present! Everyone knows the saying, “Out of sight, out of mind”, right? It’s the same when it come to learning scripture. This is why I like to hang our memory verse (and other verses) around the house. My youngest sister gave me this idea when I visited her a few months ago. She placed verses all over her kids rooms and in their school room as well. I think it’s a great reminder.
